    I considered the rear facing seat option for our Model S but discovered later that they need to be welded onto the frame during manufacturing.

    I'm looking at buying a CPO model S, but the one I'm eyeing has rear facing seats , and I have no need for those. I'd rather have the storage.

Have you though of why there is an extra reinforcement for the bumper with this option? There have been reports of people thinks adults are putting their children in the truck since it's so unusual.

    If they will add them likely depends on the age of the car and what service center you use. Rear Facing Seats require special structural upgrades to rear part of the car for safety.

    It is NOT possible to do after the build. Tesla doesn't just install the seats, but reinforces the rear chassis of the car for better protection and uses different glass for the rear hatch. That also explains the high price tag for what appears to be just a couple of seats. Even if it were technically possible, which I doubt, it would be cost prohibitive. Older cars came with the structural upgrades I bought a car in the 42XXX range and the service center said they would do the upgrade after checking my VIN, but it was more than I was willing to spend.

    Is it rear facing because we are hoping for a really late term abortion? No it is rear facing because most serious impacts involve sudden deceleration, in which case the child is pressed into the seat instead of the belts and head flinging forward.

    It's no different than if the car did not have the front crumple zone and people would likely think twice about whether sitting in the front was safe. I am not trying to argue whether they are safe or not, but just looking at the concern from a different perspective. A foot from the rear bumper is not the same as the backs seat. The term crumple zone comes to mind. Elon designed the jumpseats with his kids in mind.

    Have you though of why there is an extra reinforcement for the bumper with this option? Did you see the article where a semi ran into a Tesla with jumpseats? One vehicle was totally disabled and the other drove off for repairs. Yeah, the kid in the back was fine. The semi had to wait for a mega tow truck to the rescue. The reason you are seeing conflicting comments is that it was an upgradeable feature before.

    It's extremely difficult to figure out which can have rear seats added and which can not. For all new cars, the rear seats must be installed at the factory and can not be upgraded. Previously all Model S's had the rear bumper upgrade so the seats were easy to upgrade later.

    In fact, Tesla couldn't even demo a model to me in the Austin area due to there being no demo units with rear seats. As far as safety, they are quoted as being the safest seats in the car.
